Weekend Recap

This weekend recap is coming a little late, but oh well!

Friday: Kindergarten Immunizations! Sophia got her shots in the morning. She was so scared. I am so glad we got it over with it. The ladies in the office where she got the shots were quietly laughing at Sophia as we left because she kept limping. Afterwards I took her to McDonalds with a playland. Her limping went away, but I could tell her leg was still hurting.

Saturday: Swim lessons in the morning. We got lunch and went back to the gym. They were doing a kids day. They had crafts and games. They also had a Zumba class for kids. I have never really liked group exercise that involves dance. I didn't realize that parents had to participate. It was probably the most embarrassing and longest 45 minutes ever.  Later in the day Ry, Soph and I went for a drive to check out houses for sale.We got home, had dinner and Ry left to go fishing. Sophia wasn't feeling well (I think from the shots). She watched a movie and fell asleep.

Sunday: We were lazy and stayed in all day. :)

30 DoB: Life Lessons

Today's prompt is life lessons. I have learned more than my share. Here's a few :
  • It doesn't matter how much you plan your life. There is always something or someone that will come along and throw a wrench in it. It can be a good thing or a bad thing. But it's bound to happen.
  • When you find yourself in a bad place in life it can tempting to take the easy way out of it. In my experience the easiest way is usually something you will regret later.
  • Everyone gets down at some point. Admit it and ask for help. And don't judge others when they get down. Eventually your turn will come too.
  • Everyone has their moments of happiness and success.  It can be hard when it's not your turn, but life will be twice as happy if you learn to be happy for others and yourself.
  • Don't forget your clothes in the washer. They will get smelly :)

The Glam Series: Summer Favorites

I'm linked at Love Always, Nancy J for The Glam Series
This topic makes me think of a funny story. I'm going to try to keep it short by doing it with bullets.

Take yourself back to 2007/2008-ish.
John Frieda Beach Blonde Cool Dip Shampoo and Smooth Sailing Conditioner are my favorites.

  • I notice that it seems to flip back and forth between being sold in CVS, Walmart, and Meijers.
  • I'm a little worried that it will be discontinued.
  • Mom calls to warn me that they are on clearance at CVS in her hometown. Of course, she bought me a bunch. I run to my CVS and buy all of them on clearance.
  • Many months pass and my supply is short. I looked on "the black market" (aka e-bay). They are going to $20 per bottle.
  • I emailed the John Frieda company. I told them how sad I was about it. I told them about the "black market".  I don't know what I expected, but I HAD to let them know.
I wish I would have saved their response, but to sum up the 2 paragraph email: They have a marketing department that took everything into consideration (except my feelings). They didn't take the decision to discontinue lightly (by whose standards?). They recommended other JF products.
Those products weren't the same. If you are interested, they still sell bottles for an insanely high amount on E-bay and Amazon.

Sorry I couldn't recommend any current products. I don't really have any I love.  I do prefer any tanning oils/sunscreens in aerosol cans. Keeps my hands from getting all nasty.

April 11, 2014: Five on Friday

1. Mad Men
Hello Peggy, Joan, Don, Roger and Pete!
I LOVE Mad Men. I am so excited about the upcoming season starting on Sunday and sad about it's ending. Anyway, there is an app to make yourself a character in the show. I had to do it.
If you aren't familiar with the characters, I'm the purple with the bow.
I really wanted to give my character cigarettes, but an internal conflict prevented it.

2.  Pictures outside of Sophia

Last weekend Ry needed to do some work at a friend's house. We went out there and walked the dog around. Eventually Sophia realized there were basically giant puddles that she could walk though and get all muddy. Simon wanted no part in any of it! But I got a lot of pics.
I try not to share a lot of pics of Sophia on here and if I do they aren't usually up close.

3. Stubborn Simon

He loves riding in the truck, but its hard to tell with his expression! He wouldn't move out of the driver's seat! I kept calling him but he wouldn't budge.

4. Taxes
I normally don't procrastinate because I just want to get the whole thing over with and done. However, this year I put it off and have to do them today. Grrrrr.

5.  A Little Daily Burn Update

So far I am still enjoying the Daily Burn workouts. It is nice to have them thrown in with walking and trips to the gym. I am actually thinking of adding a page where I can log my workouts and kind of journal. Just a thought right now. I have a history of trying workout programs and not following through long term. Honestly, the fact that I am doing this 6 weeks later says a lot and it's only $10 a month.

30DoB: My Favorite Poem

Today's prompt: Favorite Poem
When I read through the prompts this was definitely the one I was most excited about writing. Even though I don't go out of my way to read poetry, I do have one poem that I love.  Here is a little bit of it:

The Builders has been my favorite poem since I read it in junior high. (No, it wasn't a homework assignment). I found a book of classic poetry that belonged to my mom and I read this poem so many times I memorized it. I only remember the first two stanzas now, but hey, its been years. It has a great message. The poem works as a comforting reminder that we all play an important role in the world. I hope you take the time to Google it and read it in it's entirety.
I also like A Dream Within a Dream. It doesn't come close to how much I enjoy reading The Builders, but I do like it. It is easy to understand why it is such a popular classic

My Biggest Fears

The day two prompt is about biggest fears.
I have a few "grown up fears"  ---> That something will happen to my daughter or something will happen to me before she is an adult. Sophia is my daughter from previous relationship. I hate to think of much her life would change if something happened to me. She has a wonderful grandma and aunt, but her life would be completely different. It's kind of been just the two of us a lot. And like all parents, the idea of something happening to her would be unbearable. Thinking about it is terrifying.

I also find myself fearing illness or sickness for my family or myself. I hear so many things about people finding out they are sick. It's scary and sad.

A less "grown up fear" is my lifelong fear of mine is mice/rats or any rodents really. It's not a little freakout like I would have over a spider. It's an more extreme, intense fear. That's all I have to say about it. I don't even like to think of them.

April Goals

I have no doubt in mind that I can tackle #1 with the help of the link-up!
Using Daily Burn/gym and dog walking I should be fine with #2 and  #3.
Now #4 and #5 will require a little more work, but should be possible!

Lower Carb Cole Slaw

One of the reasons I find it impossible to stick to a low-carb diet is that I miss side some of my favorite side dishes (and pasta, bread, soda, etc.). So, I went online and started trying to find something easy that I could make and keep in the fridge. After googling recipes I came up with this lower-carb recipe:

 Lower Carb Cole Slaw
 (makes approximately 5 1/4 cups)
  • 1 C. Mayo
  • 2 T. Truvia
  • 1/4 C. Coconut milk
  • 1/4 C. Vinegar
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 pinch of pepper
  • 16 oz. Tri-color Cole Slaw Mix (some bags are 14 oz.--that works fine too)
  •  Mix first 6 ingredients. Add vegetable mix.  Refrigerate 2 hours.
  • Optional: Add a little regular milk or coconut milk if you want it creamier.

The Damage:
Serving size : 3/4 C.
Calories:  178
Fat: 27
Carbs: 6.3
Fiber: 1.6

I know a lot of people count "net carbs", so.... 6.3 (carbs) - 1.6 (fiber) - 1 (Erythritol) = 3 net carbs
